Simi’s Rape Punishment Call Sparks Debate
Nigerian singer Simi has ignited widespread debate after calling for extreme punishment for rapists amid growing concern over sexual violence in the country.
The Afrobeats star, whose full name is Simisola Kosoko, made the remarks in a post on X late Tuesday, as public outrage continued to build over a series of rape allegations reported across Nigeria in recent weeks.
“I’m sick of this. Stop raping women,” the singer wrote, adding that severe penalties should be imposed on perpetrators. Her comments quickly went viral, drawing both support and criticism.
While some users praised Simi for speaking out forcefully on behalf of victims, others argued that her stance raised questions about due process and the treatment of false accusations. Several commentators said harsh punishment should also apply to proven cases of false rape claims.
Responding to the backlash, Simi said her comments were aimed solely at defending victims of sexual assault, not addressing false accusations. She insisted that the scale of sexual violence against women should not be minimised because of concerns about misuse of allegations.
The singer said her views were shaped by personal experience, claiming that nearly every woman she knows has faced some form of sexual assault at different points in their lives. She warned that many women feel unsafe both in public spaces and in their homes.
Simi also called on men to take greater responsibility in confronting sexual violence, urging them to hold other men accountable rather than remaining silent. She argued that a lack of accountability helps create an environment in which abuse continues.
The comments come as Nigeria grapples with renewed calls for stronger action against sexual assault, with activists demanding tougher enforcement of existing laws and greater support for survivors.
