Pete Edochie Says He Spends N40,000 Daily On Electricity

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has expressed concern over the rising cost of basic amenities in Nigeria, revealing that he spends about N40,000 daily to maintain electricity in his home.

The 78-year-old actor made the remarks during a recent appearance on Jigsaw, a programme aired by African Independent Television (AIT), where he discussed the country’s economic challenges and infrastructure issues.

Edochie said the high cost of electricity and fuel has become a heavy burden for many households, including his own. According to him, a significant portion of his daily expenses goes toward ensuring a stable power supply.

“I spend N40,000 in my home every day for light,” he said. “About N10,000 goes to electricity, while the remaining N30,000 is spent on diesel and fuel.”

The actor noted that the situation reflects the difficulties faced by many Nigerians trying to access basic services.

He also criticised what he described as a lack of attention to the struggles of ordinary citizens, questioning why living conditions appear to be worsening instead of improving.

“Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man,” he said, asking whether the country could not make progress rather than continue facing economic setbacks.

Beyond the issue of electricity costs, Edochie also raised concerns about infrastructure development, particularly in Nigeria’s South-East region. He alleged that the area has been marginalised in major projects, including railway transportation.

According to him, there was a period when the region was effectively excluded from railway connectivity, a situation he said reflects broader inequalities in infrastructure distribution across the country.

His comments add to ongoing national conversations about rising living costs, energy challenges and the uneven pace of infrastructure development in different parts of Nigeria.
