Amapiano More Profitable Than Rap, Says Shallipopi
Nigerian singer and rapper Shallipopi has explained why he shifted from rap music to Amapiano, saying the genre has proven to be more financially rewarding.
The artiste made the revelation during a recent appearance on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, where he spoke about his music journey and career decisions.
According to Shallipopi, he initially started out as a rapper and considered rap music his first love before eventually embracing Amapiano.
He stated that despite his passion for rap, the genre did not bring the level of commercial success he desired, adding that Nigerian music audiences tend to offer more support to other sounds.
The singer said Amapiano became the genre that generated income for him, which influenced his decision to focus more on it.
Shallipopi also addressed his decision to reject the Headies Award for Best Rap Song, which was awarded to his track Cast last year.
He explained that he turned down the award because he felt the organisers were trying to limit him to the rap category alone.
According to him, his work spans both singing and rap, and he believed he deserved recognition in multiple categories rather than being identified strictly as a rapper.
