Sega Launches ‘Sega Universe’ To Revive Classic Franchises
Japanese gaming giant Sega has unveiled a new initiative, Sega Universe, aimed at revitalising some of its most iconic titles across multiple forms of entertainment.
Announced on April 24, the project is built around the theme “No Old, Stay Gold,” and will focus on reimagining classic franchises such as OutRun, Streets of Rage, NiGHTS into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, Sakura Wars, and Sega Gaga.
According to the company, the initiative will extend beyond gaming, exploring new ways for audiences to engage with these properties. The first phase will centre on anniversary projects tied to titles celebrating milestones in 2026, combining nostalgia with new creative experiences.
Sega has also signalled plans to expand into animation and other media formats. In recent financial disclosures, the company indicated that several legacy franchises – including Shinobi and Eternal Champions – are being considered for animated adaptations, though specific formats and release timelines have not been confirmed.
The move reflects a broader industry trend, where major gaming companies are extending their intellectual property into film and television. Franchises like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog have demonstrated the commercial potential of cross-media storytelling.
Sega itself has already found success with its Sonic the Hedgehog franchise on the big screen, with a fourth instalment currently in development.
With Sega Universe, the company is positioning its legacy catalogue for a new generation, blending classic appeal with modern storytelling across multiple platforms.
