Mayorkun’s Mother Recalls Mistaking Davido for a Scammer During First Contact
Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale, mother of popular singer Mayorkun, has revealed that she initially believed Davido was a scammer when the music star first reached out to her son on social media.
Speaking during an appearance on the Talk to B podcast, Adewale recounted how a viral music cover by Mayorkun eventually caught Davido’s attention and led to a life-changing opportunity for the singer.
According to her, neither she nor Mayorkun took the initial message seriously because they doubted its authenticity.
“After the cover he did went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but we thought it was a scammer. Davido later said he would call. I was also with him when Davido called, Mayorkun was so excited and almost went crazy,” she said.
Adewale explained that the conversation quickly progressed after Davido contacted Mayorkun directly and invited him to meet in person.
“He told Mayorkun to send his measurements that he traveled. But when he returned, Mayowa and his brother went to meet him. That was when he gave them a full box of gifts and money. Although I was scared at the time because I didn’t know who Davido was,” she recalled.
The actress said the meeting laid the foundation for a relationship that would eventually launch Mayorkun’s music career.
“Mayorkun went back the following day, and that was when they recorded ‘Eleko’. It was easy for Mayorkun because he had been in the choir and had always loved to write poetry.”
She further revealed that after recording the hit single, Mayorkun moved in with Davido as his career began to take shape under the singer’s mentorship.
“After the recording, he moved in with Davido. After a while, I went there to see where they were staying, Davido was very pleasant and respectful,” she said.
Mayorkun went on to become one of Nigeria’s most successful Afrobeats stars after signing with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), with his breakthrough single Eleko serving as the launchpad for a career that has produced several hit songs and awards.
