Adam Back Denies Claim He is Bitcoin’s Mysterious Creator Satoshi Nakamoto

British крипто entrepreneur Adam Back has rejected claims that he is the elusive founder of Bitcoin, following a report by The New York Times suggesting he could be the person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

Back dismissed the theory, describing it as a case of “confirmation bias.” In a post on X, he stated clearly that he is not Satoshi, though he acknowledged being deeply involved in early work around cryptography, privacy, and digital cash.

The New York Times investigation, led by journalist John Carreyrou, pointed to similarities between Back’s emails and Satoshi’s writings, as well as overlapping timelines in their online activity. The report also highlighted that Back appeared less active on Bitcoin forums during the period when Satoshi was most visible, returning after the anonymous figure disappeared.

Back pushed back on those claims, saying he was active in discussions at the time and that the similarities cited were coincidental, reflecting shared interests among experts in the field rather than proof of identity.

The question of who created Bitcoin remains one of the internet’s biggest mysteries, partly because of the vast fortune tied to its origins. The person or group behind Satoshi is believed to control more than a million Bitcoins – a stash now worth an estimated $70 billion.

Over the years, several individuals have been named or have claimed to be Satoshi, including Peter Todd, Dorian Nakamoto, and Craig Wright. However, none of these claims have been definitively proven, and some have been widely dismissed.

Back himself has previously testified against Wright’s claim to be Satoshi in a UK court case, where a judge ultimately ruled that Wright was not the creator of Bitcoin.

Despite ongoing speculation, Back said he does not know who Satoshi is – and believes the anonymity may actually benefit Bitcoin’s decentralised nature.
