Amazon Rolls Out AI-Powered Alexa+ Upgrade Across the UK
Amazon has unveiled a major artificial intelligence upgrade to its popular voice assistant Amazon Echo, introducing a new version called Alexa+ that aims to make interactions more conversational and intuitive.
The upgraded assistant, set to roll out across the UK, is designed to move beyond basic commands by enabling more natural, chat-like conversations. According to Amazon, Alexa+ can follow context across multiple questions and respond more proactively, marking a shift from its earlier, more transactional style.
The update comes amid growing competition from advanced AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, which have set new standards for ease of communication and responsiveness.
Industry analysts say the upgrade could divide opinion among users. Jessica Miller, head of data insights at FDM/CCS Insight, noted that while some users may appreciate the more relaxed and conversational tone, others could find it unfamiliar or even unsettling. She added that UK users are likely to notice an immediate difference in how the assistant responds.
Demonstrations of Alexa+ highlight the shift in tone. While the current version might deliver a straightforward weather update, the upgraded assistant responds in a more casual, human-like manner, offering fuller and more engaging replies.
Smart speakers like the Echo have faced criticism in recent years for limited evolution since their debut in 2016. Marketing executive Ed Freed previously described them as being used largely for basic tasks, such as timers, rather than as fully integrated digital assistants.
Despite this, Amazon reports strong usage figures in the UK, with over half the population having tried an Echo device and more than 114 billion recorded interactions since 2023.
Competition in the smart home space is also intensifying. Google Nest, a key rival, is being rebranded with deeper integration of Gemini AI, though its hardware updates have lagged in recent years.
Amazon said Alexa+ will be available at no extra cost to subscribers of Amazon Prime, currently priced at £95 annually, while non-subscribers can access it for £19.99 per month. New Echo devices will support the upgrade immediately, with existing users required to register online for access.
The development also reflects Amazon’s broader strategy to extract more value from its smart home ecosystem. The Echo line has reportedly generated significant financial losses over the years, partly due to limited follow-on spending by users after purchasing the devices.
Analysts suggest that even if Alexa+ does not drive substantial subscription revenue, its enhanced conversational capabilities could provide Amazon with richer user data, potentially strengthening its advertising and personalization efforts.
