Apple Settles $20 Million Lawsuit Over Apple Watch Battery Swelling
Apple has agreed to a $20 million settlement in a class action lawsuit concerning battery swelling issues in early Apple Watch models. Owners of the Series 0, 1, 2, and 3 who reported swelling problems may be eligible for compensation.
The lawsuit, Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. While Apple has agreed to settle, the company denies any wrongdoing and maintains that its smartwatches were not defective. A company spokesperson stated that the decision was made to avoid the costs and complexities of litigation.
Who Qualifies for Compensation?
Users who owned an Apple Watch Series 0, 1, 2, or 3 and reported battery swelling to Apple between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024, may receive a payout ranging from $20 to $50 per affected device.
To claim compensation, eligible users must verify or update their payment details by April 10, 2025. Those who wish to opt out or contest the settlement have until February 24, 2025, to do so.
Although Apple continues to refute claims that its devices had defects, the settlement aims to close the chapter on long-standing complaints about battery-related issues in early Apple Watch models.
