Black Adam Box Office Hits $100M Faster Than Any DCEU Movie Since Aquaman

Black Adam takes in $27.7 million in its second weekend, allowing it to pass the $100 million mark quicker than nearly every recent DCEU film.

As reported by Screenrant, in its second weekend at the domestic box office, Black Adam has already passed the $100 million mark.

Black Adam is the latest DCEU film to release, opening on October 21. The film, which reunites star Dwayne Johnson with Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra, follows the origin story of the titular antihero, a former slave from Kahndaq who is given godlike powers and released from imprisonment after 5,000 years.

In the modern day, he encounters the Justice Society of America, which includes Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).

Black Adam had a solid opening weekend, taking the #1 spot at the domestic box office with a gross of $67 million. This was the best opening weekend for any film in the franchise since Aquaman in 2018. It was also the best box office opening weekend for any film with The Rock in the lead.

Per Variety, Black Adam has taken in an additional $27.7 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $111 million.

While this reflects a 59% drop between week one and week two, this kind of box office doldrums isn’t uncommon over the generally slow Halloween weekend. Plus, this take was still enough for the film to maintain its position at #1 for the weekend, beating out the new wide-release horror film Prey for the Devil, which debuted at #3.

After Aquaman’s strong opening, it went on to make over $1 billion worldwide, a path that Black Adam could potentially follow.

However, it still has a long way to go in order to make that happen. At the moment things are looking good, as its opening weekend outstripped DCEU pandemic-era releases including The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984, as well as recent pre-pandemic films like 2020’s Birds of Prey and 2019’s Shazam!.

Of those films, only Shazam! made over $100 million in the domestic box office over its entire run, taking three weeks in theaters to cross that mark.

Aquaman also took two weeks to cross $100 million, but it needed an extra boost from the long Christmas weekend, meaning that Black Adam could potentially be on track to outpace that film’s record performance.

One other boost is the fact that the only wide release competition next weekend is the less buzzy Armageddon Time, allowing the film an easy path to another #1 weekend.

However, the following weekend will see the release of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will present a huge roadblock to the film drawing in new audiences beyond that point, so it remains to be seen how high it can climb.
