Burna Boy Sets New Spotify Record for Highest Monthly Listeners by an African Artist
Nigerian music star Burna Boy has become the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners in Spotify history, setting a new milestone on the global streaming platform.
The Grammy-winning singer, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, recently surpassed the previous record of 46.58 million monthly listeners, which was held by South African artist Tyla, after reaching 46.84 million listeners.
His audience has continued to grow, with Burna Boy now recording 47.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, bringing him closer to becoming the first African artist to reach the 50 million monthly listener mark.
The increase in streaming figures has largely been driven by “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira, which serves as an official song for the FIFA World Cup.
The track has also enjoyed significant global success, recently climbing to No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart.
The achievement makes Burna Boy the first African artist to top the global Spotify chart since Wizkid reached the summit in 2016 through his collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake on the global hit “One Dance.”
The latest record adds to Burna Boy’s growing list of international achievements, further cementing his position as one of Africa’s most successful artists on global streaming platforms.
