Champion Breweries Acquires Bullet Brands, Eyes African Expansion
Champion Breweries Plc has completed the acquisition of the Bullet brand portfolio from Sun Mark, a move the company says will accelerate its expansion beyond Nigeria into multiple African markets.
The transaction, first announced in August 2025, transfers ownership of Bullet’s trademarks, formulations and global commercial rights to Champion through an asset carve-out. The brands are now held in a newly incorporated entity based in the Netherlands, in which Champion has a majority stake, while Vinar N.V., Sun Mark’s majority shareholder, retains a minority interest.
Bullet products are currently sold in 14 African countries, giving Champion an immediate footprint across the continent. The acquisition positions the brewer to compete more aggressively in the fast-growing ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage and energy drink segments, complementing its existing portfolio.
Company executives said the deal marks a shift from a largely domestic brewing business to a broader, multi-category consumer platform with pan-African reach. Bullet Black is a leading ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage in Nigeria, while Bullet Blue has established a presence in the energy drink market in several African countries.
Champion said the acquisition is expected to strengthen foreign exchange earnings, expand distribution networks and improve supply chain efficiency, while reducing the need for heavy upfront investment in new manufacturing capacity. The structure also allows for the possibility of future local production in Nigeria, potentially turning the country into an export hub for the brand.
The deal was funded through Champion’s recent capital-raising efforts, including a rights issue and public offer, which the company said have reinforced its balance sheet.
Commenting on the completion, Chairman Imo-Abasi Jacob said the acquisition and the successful equity raises represented a “defining moment” for the company, reflecting investor confidence in its long-term growth strategy.
Regulatory approvals were obtained from relevant authorities, including Nigeria’s market and competition regulators, while a consortium of financial and legal advisers supported the transaction.
Champion Breweries, a publicly listed company with a brewing history spanning more than five decades, produces brands such as Champion Lager and Champ Malta and is part of the enJOYcorp Group, which focuses on scaling African consumer brands across regional and global markets.
