FBI Warns Gmail Users of AI-Driven Scams Impersonating Google Support

Gmail users are being urged to stay alert as cybercriminals deploy AI-powered scams designed to steal login credentials. The FBI has issued a warning about a sophisticated phishing attack that tricks users into granting hackers access to their accounts by impersonating Google support representatives.

The scam begins with a fraudulent phone call that appears to come from Google’s customer service. The caller, using AI-generated speech, claims that someone has attempted to access the target’s Gmail account from overseas. Shortly after the call, the victim receives an email that appears to be from Google, urging them to use a verification code to recover their account. However, by doing so, they may unknowingly hand over control of their account to the attackers.

These tactics are not limited to email accounts—banking details, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive logins could also be at risk.

The FBI advises users to never share passwords or login credentials over the phone and to be cautious of unsolicited support calls. If unsure about the legitimacy of a call, users should hang up and contact Google directly through official customer service channels.

To enhance security, Gmail users are encouraged to enable advanced protection features, such as passkeys and smart keys, which offer an extra layer of security even if login details are compromised.
