Chipotle to Open First Restaurant in Mexico Despite Social Media Skepticism
US fast-food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill is set to open its first restaurant in Mexico this week, marking a significant milestone as the company expands into the country that inspired much of its menu.
The restaurant chain, which operates more than 4,100 locations worldwide, announced on Monday that the launch represents an important step in its international growth strategy. Chipotle is best known for its customizable burritos, tacos and bowls.
The first Mexican outlet will open in the northeastern state of Nuevo León, near the Texas border, and will serve as what the company described as an “important proof-of-concept.”
Chipotle plans to open additional restaurants in the state before expanding into Mexico City in 2027 through its partnership with Mexican restaurant operator Alsea, which also manages brands including Domino’s Pizza, Starbucks and Chili’s.
Chief Executive Officer Scott Boatwright said the company is entering the market with respect for the country’s culinary traditions.
“We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country’s culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence.”
He added:
“We look forward to serving new guests and earning a place in Mexico’s vibrant dining culture.”
The announcement has generated mixed reactions online, with many social media users questioning whether a US interpretation of Mexican cuisine can succeed in Mexico itself.
One user on X wrote:
“Bold move selling Mexico a corporate version of Mexico.”
Another questioned the business case for the expansion, asking:
“Why would Mexicans pay for Chipotle when they have perfectly fine and healthy food available to them?”
Others compared the move to other unlikely restaurant expansions.
“It’s like Pizza Hut opening a location in Napoli, makes no sense,” one commenter wrote.
Another joked:
“Next up, Panda Express opening its first mainland China location.”
Some observers, however, suggested the restaurant could appeal to international visitors or become a novelty attraction for locals.
Chipotle intends to open as many as 370 new restaurants worldwide this year, including new locations in Singapore and South Korea, as it continues its global expansion.
The company’s move into Mexico comes despite previous struggles by American restaurant chains attempting to establish themselves in the countries where their signature dishes originated.
Taco Bell twice attempted to enter the Mexican market before eventually exiting in 2010 after failing to attract enough customers.
Similarly, Domino’s Pizza shut its final Italian outlets in 2022 after seven years of competition with local pizzerias in the birthplace of pizza.
