Diddy Could Become First Person to Have Key to New York Revoked
Diddy, who received the prestigious Key to New York City last year, may become the first person to have it rescinded. This possibility emerged after shocking footage recently surfaced, showing the music mogul assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie in 2016.
In an interview with PIX11 on Monday (May 19), NYC Mayor Eric Adams addressed the disturbing video that shows Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs, brutally attacking Cassie in a hotel corridor. Adams, who awarded Diddy the key during a Times Square ceremony last September, revealed that the city is considering revoking the honour.
“I think all of us were deeply disturbed by watching that chilling video of the young lady being assaulted by him,” Adams stated. “The committee and the team, we’ve never rescinded a key before, but we are now sitting down to see what the next steps forward are going to be.”
When pressed further on the issue, Adams confirmed that revocation is on the table. “We are taking everything under analysis and the team will come back [to] me with a final determination.”
The video, obtained by CNN last week, shows Diddy chasing Cassie in a hotel corridor, wearing only a towel. He throws her to the floor, kicks and stomps on her, and drags her back to his room. The footage also depicts him pushing her against a wall as she tries to use a hotel phone and throwing a vase at her.
This footage appears to support Cassie’s allegations in a sexual assault lawsuit she filed against Diddy last November, just two months after he received the key. The lawsuit included claims of rape, abuse, and sex trafficking, and was settled the day after it was filed. The terms of the settlement remain undisclosed.
Diddy has faced multiple sexual assault allegations recently, which he has categorically denied, labelling them as character assassination attempts and quick payday schemes. “Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family, and for the truth,” he stated.
However, after the footage was released, Diddy acknowledged his actions and issued an apology. “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was fucked up — I mean, I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses,” he said in a video posted on Instagram. “My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I’m disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”
He added, “I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to being a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen if Diddy will indeed become the first person to have the Key to New York City revoked.
