Disney Makes Hundreds More Layoffs as it Cuts Costs

The Walt Disney Company is implementing another round of job cuts affecting several hundred employees globally, as part of continued efforts to streamline operations and adapt to a shifting entertainment landscape.

This latest round will impact roles across multiple departments, including film and television marketing, content development, casting, and corporate finance. While the company did not disclose specific numbers, it emphasized that no teams will be completely shut down and that the reductions are being made with a “surgical” approach to minimize disruption.

A Disney spokesperson stated, “As our industry transforms at a rapid pace, we are continuously evaluating how best to manage our operations while supporting the creativity and innovation that audiences expect from Disney.”

The move follows a significant workforce reduction in 2023, when CEO Bob Iger spearheaded a cost-cutting initiative that led to the elimination of around 7,000 positions. That strategy aimed to save $5.5 billion amid rising costs and changes in consumer viewing habits, especially the global shift from traditional cable TV to streaming platforms.

The entertainment giant, which owns major brands like Marvel Studios, ESPN, and Hulu, currently employs approximately 233,000 people worldwide, including over 60,000 outside the United States.

Despite the layoffs, Disney’s financial performance in early 2025 has shown signs of recovery. The company reported $23.6 billion in revenue for the first quarter – up 7% from the same period last year—driven largely by growth in Disney+ subscribers.

On the content front, Disney has had a mixed year. The live-action remake of Snow White received underwhelming reviews and box office results, while Lilo & Stitch, released over the Memorial Day weekend, smashed records and has already grossed more than $610 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

As the company continues to recalibrate its structure and offerings to meet evolving viewer demands, more changes could be on the horizon.
