Erigga Criticises Nigerians for Valuing Foreign Artistes Over Local Talent

Nigerian rapper and singer, Erigga, has voiced his disappointment over what he described as Nigerians’ growing preference for foreign entertainers at the expense of homegrown talent.

Speaking during an interview with Yanga FM, the Warri-born artiste lamented that the relocation of the Headies Awards from Nigeria to the United States underscores the country’s increasing fascination with international validation rather than celebrating its own creative excellence.

Erigga argued that despite Nigeria’s abundance of musical talent and large fan base, many citizens still attach greater importance to foreign recognition.

“Nigerians have this attitude of disregarding our own. The average Nigerian would rather show you 300 people dancing in London than 5,000 people enjoying a concert here in Nigeria,” he said.

He further stressed the need for Nigerians to appreciate and support local acts just as foreign audiences do for their own artistes.

“Music should be for everyone. No matter where you are, you should celebrate your own. Over there, they support their artistes – but here, we prefer what’s outside,” he added.

The rapper, known for his raw street-style lyricism, also dismissed suggestions that he should rap in English to appeal to wider audiences, saying his music remains true to the realities of the people he represents.
