Grammy Awards 2024: The Only Nigerian Songs That Might be Nominated for New Category

As anticipation builds for the upcoming Grammy Awards 2024, music enthusiasts and industry experts have begun speculating about potential Nigerian songs that could receive nominations in the newly introduced category. Billboard, a prominent American media outlet, has joined the conversation by sharing its predictions for the Best African Music Performance category.

The eligibility period set by the Recording Academy, which determines the projects that are considered for the Grammy Awards 2024, has fueled discussions on social media. Billboard’s predictions shed light on the possible Nigerian songs that may be recognized in this category, specifically designed to celebrate African music.

The decision to introduce the Best African Music Performance category is seen as a response to the global success and influence of the Afrobeats genre. It also reflects the acknowledgement that songs like “Essence” and “Last Last,” which were arguably two of the biggest songs in 2021 and 2022, did not receive recognition in the Best Global Music Performance category.

Billboard’s speculated nominees for the inaugural edition of the Best African Music Performance category include notable tracks such as “2:30” by Asake, “Sittin’ on Top of the World” by Burna Boy, “Charm” by Rema, “People” by Libianca, “Unavailable” by Davido & Musa Keys, “Soweto” by Victony, “Party No Dey Stop” by Adekunle Gold & Zinoleesky, “Reason” by Omah Lay, “Mnike” by Tyler ICU, Tumelo.za, DJ Maphorisa, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA & Tyron Dee, and “Amapiano” by Asake & Olamide.

If these predictions hold true, it would mark the first Grammy nomination for all the artists in this category, except for Burna Boy, who would be receiving his seventh nomination.

The speculation surrounding the Grammy Awards 2024 nominations has sparked excitement and debate within the music community. Nigerian music fans eagerly await the official announcement to see if these predicted songs will indeed earn the coveted Grammy recognition.
