Harley-Davidson Ends Diversity Initiatives Following Pressure from Right-Wing Campaign
Harley-Davidson has announced the discontinuation of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, marking a significant shift away from progressive policies the company had previously supported. The move comes in response to a campaign led by conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who has successfully challenged DEI efforts at several major American companies.
On Monday, Harley-Davidson revealed that it has not operated a DEI function since April 2024 and does not have any current DEI programs. The company has also eliminated hiring quotas and supplier diversity spending goals. In a statement posted on X, Harley-Davidson expressed disappointment over the recent social media backlash and stated, “We are saddened by the negativity on social media over the last few weeks, designed to divide the Harley-Davidson community.”
The company also announced plans to reevaluate its sponsorships and affiliations, including a review of partnerships with organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and potential withdrawal from LGBTQ+ Pride festivals. Harley-Davidson indicated that its future focus would be on expanding the sport of motorcycling rather than continuing its previous DEI efforts.
Starbuck’s criticism of Harley-Davidson began in late July, when he highlighted the company’s past DEI-related activities, including sponsorships and donations, and accused it of becoming overly “woke.” His social media posts were later amplified by prominent right-wing figures such as Elon Musk.
Harley-Davidson has not yet responded to additional requests for comment regarding the changes.
