Jay-Z Reveals Blue Ivy’s Original Name and Father-Daughter Dynamic

Renowned rapper and entrepreneur JAY-Z disclosed the initial name plan for his oldest daughter, Blue Ivy, during a two-part interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings. In the conversation aired on Friday (October 27), the artist revealed that “Brooklyn” was the name they initially contemplated for Blue Ivy. However, he detailed that during Beyoncé’s pregnancy, the couple often referred to their unborn child as a “blueberry” due to the sonograms, which ultimately led to the alteration of the name.

“For nine months we were like, ‘Look at the little blueberry.’ So it was just natural, we just took the ‘berry’ off and called her Blue,” JAY-Z explained to King during the interview.

While discussing his eldest daughter, the rapper admitted that Blue Ivy initially resisted acknowledging her father’s coolness, but their relationship evolved over time. He recalled instances where she questioned the fashion coolness of her outfits, showing a shift in their dynamic.

Additionally, JAY-Z elaborated on the genesis of his moniker ‘One Take Hov,’ describing how his precise lyric delivery originated from the era of recording on actual tape. The rapper emphasized the need for accurate one-take recordings due to the cumbersome editing process involved with analogue technology.

“This was when you were recording to actual tape. So you can’t mess up because then you gotta go all the way back and you gotta cut the tape. That’s where the whole ‘One Take Hov’ came from,” he explained.

JAY-Z detailed that the process of physically cutting and manipulating tape required precision in delivering lyrics flawlessly in one take to avoid lengthy editing processes.

The interview offered insights into the creative and personal sides of the artist, revealing a new layer to his life outside the limelight.
