Kendrick Lamar Becomes Most Awarded Rapper In Grammy History
Kendrick Lamar delivered a dominant performance at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, emerging as the biggest winner in the rap categories and setting a new record in the process.
The rapper claimed all four major rap awards on the night. His album GNX was named Best Rap Album, while TV Off, a collaboration with Lefty Gunplay, earned Best Rap Song. Lamar also won Best Melodic Rap Performance for Luther, featuring SZA, and Best Rap Performance for Chains & Whips, his joint effort with Clipse.
Beyond the rap categories, Luther secured one of the ceremony’s top honours, winning Record of the Year.
With these victories, Lamar now holds 27 Grammy Awards, surpassing Jay-Z’s previous record of 25 to become the most-awarded rapper in the history of the Grammys.
The night also saw notable wins across other categories. British singer Olivia Dean was named Best New Artist, prevailing over fellow nominees Leon Thomas, KATSEYE, Addison Rae and Lola Young. Her win extended a trend that has seen only female artists take home the Best New Artist award since 2017.
Billie Eilish picked up Song of the Year for Wildflower, marking a record-setting achievement in the category.
Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny also made history, as his album Debí Tirar Más Fotos became the first Spanish-language project to win Album of the Year at the Grammys.
Music executive and producer Pharrell Williams was honoured with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award in recognition of his influence on music and culture.
Despite Lamar’s historic night, Beyoncé continues to hold the overall record as the most decorated artist in Grammy history, with 35 awards to her name.
