Lagos Plans Introduction Of State-Issued Driver’s Licence

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and improve traffic management.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to the commissioner, motorists in Lagos will have the option of choosing between the existing federal driver’s licence and the proposed Lagos State-issued licence once the initiative becomes operational.

Osiyemi explained that the new system is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, enhancing safety standards, and making the licensing process more efficient for drivers across the state.

He added that the arrangement is also expected to address delays often experienced during driver’s licence applications and renewals.

Providing updates on licensing activities, the commissioner revealed that 56,876 driver’s licences were processed within the review period.

The figure includes 27,067 new applications and 29,810 renewals carried out in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Osiyemi further disclosed that 1,158 international driver permits were issued during the same period.

Speaking on rail transportation projects, the commissioner stated that the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025.

He added that the second phase of the Blue Line extension, which will run from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to become fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.

The commissioner also revealed that the Lagos State Government has acquired 24 additional train coaches for the Red Line Rail corridor to improve passenger movement.

On future rail expansion, Osiyemi said work is progressing on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line Rail project, which is expected to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
