Lots of Talentless People Hiding Behind Afrobeats – Ruggedman

Veteran rapper Michael Ugochukwu Steven, popularly known as Ruggedman, has voiced his concerns about the misuse of the term “Afrobeats,” alleging that many “talentless people” are exploiting the genre for their own gain.

In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, Ruggedman expressed his discontent with how the term Afrobeats has been appropriated, stating, “When you ask me what Afrobeats is, I would say Afrobeats is what a lot of talentless people hide behind.”

The rapper emphasized that the widespread use of the term does not accurately represent the rich musical heritage and creativity associated with Afrobeats. He clarified, “They said, ‘Afrobeats to the world.’ I said, ‘No. It’s some artists to the world.’ It’s not the Afrobeats [genre], it’s some artists.”

Furthermore, Ruggedman disclosed the emotional toll of facing criticism on social media regarding his relevance as an artist. Despite encountering detractors who suggest his time in the spotlight has passed, he finds solace in knowing that his legacy continues to inspire others. He remarked, “but what I said to myself is whoever he or she [the troll] is listening to right now is inspired by me.”

Ruggedman’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the authenticity and representation within the Afrobeats genre, shedding light on the challenges faced by established artists in navigating an evolving music landscape.
