Netflix Renews Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ for Second Season
Renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has confirmed that his hit series Anikulapo will return for a second season on Netflix. Afolayan shared the news on Monday, October 7, through his Instagram account, revealing that filming for the upcoming season took place in Oyo State, Nigeria, and Ghana.
The new season promises to delve deeper into captivating storylines rooted in Nigerian history and culture. In a statement, Afolayan expressed his enthusiasm for the renewal, saying, “We’re thrilled that Netflix has decided to bring Anikulapo back for another season. This series is a true reflection of Nigerian culture and history, and we are committed to telling these stories authentically.”
He added that the new season will explore the complex history of the slave trade, featuring actors from Portugal, Ghana, and Nigeria to highlight the global connections to Nigeria’s past. “Filming in culturally rich locations like Oyo State and Ghana helped us anchor the story in places that carry the weight of our heritage,” Afolayan said.

Returning cast members include Sola Shobowale, Gabriel Afolayan, Owobo Ogunde, and Bimbo Ademoye, alongside new additions such as Saga, Kie Kie, Abija, Antar Laniyan, and Saheed Balogun.
Anikulapo originally premiered in 2022, followed by the seasonal film Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre in March 2024. While the release date for the second season is yet to be announced, anticipation is building among fans of the series.
