Nigerians in Dangerous Time – Rapper Illbliss

Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has raised concerns about the country’s current trajectory, describing this period as “a very dangerous part” of Nigeria’s history.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Real Shareholders Podcast, the rapper pointed to worsening insecurity, deepening economic hardship, and increasing government propaganda as signs of national distress.

Illbliss, known for his socially conscious lyrics, revealed that his 2020 track titled Country was removed from radio airplay due to its criticism of the government. He noted that this wasn’t the first time his music had faced censorship, citing previous tracks such as A Different Kind of War and National Cake, which also struggled to receive airtime.

“OAPs often say they can’t play these songs because they might get fined,” he explained. “That’s the environment we’re in now – one where honest commentary is being stifled.”

He further alleged that digital platforms are now being used by the government to push back against criticism, replacing traditional media with tech-driven tools to shape public perception.

“There’s a wave of online responses that feels artificial – coordinated tweets saying things like, ‘Why are you mocking the country? Things aren’t that bad.’ It’s digital pushback. The government is funding narratives across platforms, including podcasts, where people sit and defend policies that aren’t working,” he said.

Illbliss warned that social media, once seen as a tool for citizen empowerment, is now being weaponised against the people.

“This is where we are now – the government is matching the people’s energy. The same platforms we thought would give us a voice are being flooded with distractions and spin. It’s a lot more advanced now,” he added.

His comments have resonated with many Nigerians who feel increasingly frustrated by economic conditions and disinformation in both mainstream and digital spaces.
