Nike Readies 2026 “Ekiden” Running Collection with Nod to Early 2000s Air Zoom Katana
Nike Running is preparing to release a new edition of its annual “Ekiden” collection in Spring 2026, drawing inspiration this time from the Air Zoom Katana, a performance running model first introduced in 2001. The upcoming lineup will feature four silhouettes styled in the Katana’s signature high-visibility “Volt” palette, paying tribute to both the archival shoe and Japan’s long-distance relay tradition.

The Air Zoom Katana, designed during Steven Smith’s time at Nike, was known for its lightweight build, visibly cushioned heel unit, and sharp, blade-like paneling – design cues inspired by the Japanese katana sword. Smith, now associated with Crocs and formerly with Yeezy, appeared to acknowledge the revival on social media, hinting at the return of a design era he helped define.
The “Ekiden” series pays homage to the historic Japanese relay race format in which teams pass a cloth sash, known as a tasuki, across extended distances. The cultural reference has been a recurring theme in Nike’s annual packs, often accompanied by bold colors and symbolic graphics.

This year’s collection will include the Vomero Plus, Alphafly 3, Vaporfly 4, and Rival Fly 4. Each pair features bright Volt uppers with graphic detailing that mirrors the Katana’s original overlay patterns. The Alphafly, Vaporfly and Vomero models also incorporate red Japanese characters on the tongue as a direct nod to the race tradition.
Nike has yet to announce exact release dates, but the collection is expected to arrive globally in Spring 2026. Further product images and pricing details are anticipated in the months ahead.
