Rema, Burna Boy Top 2023 Headies Awards: Full Winners List
Nigerian music stars Rema and Burna Boy emerged as the big winners at the prestigious 2023 Headies Awards, scooping up three awards each during the glittering event held on Sunday, September 3, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta. The Headies Awards is renowned for celebrating the finest talents in Pan-African and Afrobeats music.
Rema claimed the titles of Best Male Artiste, Digital Artiste of the Year, and African Artiste of the Year. The global hit “Calm Down,” which featured a collaboration between Rema and international sensation Selena Gomez, earned them the International Artiste of the Year award. Furthermore, Director K, responsible for crafting the music video for the “Calm Down” remix, clinched the Best Music Video accolade.
Burna Boy, a trailblazing figure in the Afrobeats scene, secured victories in the Afrobeats Single of the Year and Song of the Year categories for his chart-topping track “Last Last.” Additionally, he walked away with the Best R&B Single award for “For My Hand,” a remarkable collaboration with British music sensation Ed Sheeran.
Other notable winners at the awards ceremony included Odumodublvck, Asake, Victony, and Tempoe, each of whom claimed two awards in their respective categories.
The eligibility period for the 2023 Headies Awards spanned from January 2022 to March 2023. The awards show was hosted by actor and presenter Terrence J, along with Nigerian actress Osas Ighodaro. The event was broadcast live on YouTube in the United States and the HipTV Network in Africa.
The fiercely contested Rookie of the Year category featured talented artists such as Bayanni, Khaid, Guchi, Bloody Civilian, Odumodublvck, and Eltee Skhillz. The victor, Odumodublvck, not only basks in glory but also takes home a solar-powered, fully furnished two-bedroom house.
Music mogul Sean “Love” Combs was honoured with the International Artiste Recognition Award, although he was not in attendance at the ceremony. Organizers have assured that his award plaque will be duly delivered.
The Headies Awards, originally known as the Hip Hop World Awards, was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to celebrate exceptional accomplishments in the Nigerian music industry.
This marked the second consecutive year that the awards show was held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. It had traditionally taken place in Lagos or Nigeria every year from 2006 to 2021, with the exceptions of 2017 and 2020 when the ceremony did not occur.
In the past year, three major all-genre music awards shows have introduced Afrobeats or African music categories. The American Music Awards was the first to incorporate such a category, naming Wizkid as the inaugural winner. Subsequently, the MTV Video Music Awards and the Grammys followed suit by introducing categories that celebrate the richness of African music. Rema & Gomez’s “Calm Down” has been making waves as a front-runner in these international music awards circuits, featuring prominently in nominations and categories.
