Seun Kuti Shares Controversial Claims About Fela’s Relationships
Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has made fresh claims about the personal life of his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, sparking debate over the late icon’s relationships and legacy.
Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Seun alleged that Fela did not restrict his wives from engaging in relationships with other men, describing it as part of the singer’s belief in personal freedom.
According to him, this lifestyle decision had serious consequences, claiming that some of the women contracted HIV from external partners and passed it on to Fela. He argued that this challenges widespread assumptions that the late musician was responsible for transmitting the disease.
Seun acknowledged that his father made mistakes but maintained that Fela’s broader legacy as a cultural and political figure remains significant.
The claims have drawn attention due to Fela’s unconventional personal life, which included marrying 27 women in a single ceremony in Lagos in 1978 – an event that remains one of the most talked-about moments in Nigerian music history.
While Fela’s influence on Afrobeat and global music is widely celebrated, discussions about his personal life continue to generate differing perspectives among fans and commentators.
