Stephen A. Smith Reportedly Inks $100 Million Deal to Stay at ESPN

ESPN has reportedly locked in one of its most prominent personalities for the foreseeable future. Stephen A. Smith has agreed to a new five-year contract with the network, reportedly valued at $100 million, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.

Under the terms of the deal, Smith will continue as the centerpiece of “First Take,” ESPN’s flagship morning debate show. However, he will scale back appearances on other programs, including stepping away from his regular role on the network’s NBA pregame show. He may still make appearances on “Monday Night Football” and other major ESPN events.

The new contract significantly boosts Smith’s earnings, increasing his annual salary to $20 million, up from $12 million under his previous deal. His lucrative agreement puts him in rare company within the sports media industry, earning more annually than some NBA stars, including Klay Thompson, D’Angelo Russell, and Chris Paul.

Smith, a longtime ESPN figure, has been with the network for two decades and became a full-time host on “First Take” in 2012. His outspoken style, bold takes, and signature on-air persona – especially his well-known disdain for the Dallas Cowboys – have made him one of the most recognizable figures in sports media.

Beyond ESPN, the new contract reportedly allows Smith more freedom to pursue outside opportunities, including discussing politics on other platforms. He has been increasingly vocal about political issues and has even expressed interest in a potential 2028 presidential run.
