Survey Reveals Limited Daily Use of AI Tools Despite Hype

A recent study indicates that despite the significant hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) products like ChatGPT, regular usage remains low. The research, conducted by the Reuters Institute and Oxford University, surveyed 12,000 individuals across six countries, including the UK, and found that only 2% of British respondents use these tools daily.

However, younger demographics are showing greater interest. The study highlights that 18 to 24-year-olds are the most enthusiastic users of generative AI technology. Dr. Richard Fletcher, the report’s lead author, noted a “mismatch” between the excitement about AI and actual public engagement.

The research focused on generative AI tools, which can produce human-like responses to text prompts and create images, audio, and video. ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, brought generative AI into the spotlight, sparking a competitive rush among tech companies to develop similar features. Despite this, the study suggests that generative AI has yet to become a staple in everyday internet use.

“Large parts of the public are not particularly interested in generative AI, with 30% of people in the UK unaware of prominent products like ChatGPT,” said Dr. Fletcher.

The study also explored public perceptions of AI’s impact, revealing a mix of optimism and concern. Key findings include:

Most respondents anticipate significant societal impact from generative AI within the next five years, particularly in news, media, and science.
Many believe generative AI will improve their personal lives.
However, there is a general pessimism about AI’s broader societal impact, with concerns about its use in journalism and potential job security threats.
“People’s hopes and fears for generative AI vary by sector,” Dr. Fletcher explained. “There is optimism for its application in science and healthcare, but caution regarding its role in news and journalism.”

The study emphasizes the need for nuanced discussions about AI’s future, involving governments and regulators. The findings were derived from an online questionnaire conducted in Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK, and the USA.
