Tiwa Savage Reveals How Pregnancy Affected Her Vocal Ability

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has opened up about the challenges she faced while recording her R.E.D album during pregnancy, revealing that the experience significantly affected her vocal range.

Speaking in a recent interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, the award-winning singer shared how the physical changes of pregnancy impacted her performance in the studio, forcing her to adjust the pitch of some songs on the project.

“I was pregnant when I recorded R.E.D,” she said. “I would be in the studio crying with my big belly. It was a struggle to record the album. I had to change the key of some songs because I couldn’t hit certain notes the way I used to.”

Savage also recounted how her cravings shaped the studio environment at the time. As the first artist at Mavin Records to become pregnant, she said her label boss, Don Jazzy, and team members were supportive.

“Whenever they noticed my energy going down, Jazzy would tell them to get me my cravings – eggs and bread,” she recalled.

Tiwa Savage signed with Mavin Records in 2012 and played a key role in the label’s rise to mainstream dominance before exiting in 2019 to join Universal Music Group.
