Terry G Claims He Paved the Way for Nigerian Artistes to Smoke Cannabis Onscreen

Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has sparked conversation on social media after declaring that he was the trailblazer who gave artists the confidence to smoke cannabis openly on screen.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the “Free Madness” crooner said his boldness and sacrifices helped dismantle a long-standing stigma within the entertainment space.

“No hard feelings, it’s all love,” he wrote, “but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen.”

Terry G’s statement quickly drew mixed reactions online. While some fans acknowledged his unconventional style and rebellious image during his rise to fame in the late 2000s, others pushed back, pointing to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti – who was known for his open use of cannabis and even lit up on stage long before Terry G’s era.

Critics argued that public cannabis use in Nigerian music predates Terry G, citing cultural pioneers like Fela as the true forerunners. Nonetheless, Terry G’s comment has reignited debate over changing norms in the music industry and the role of individual artists in challenging taboos.
