Why I Wished for Death in My 20s – Adekunle Gold

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has spoken candidly about living with sickle cell disease, revealing the emotional and physical challenges he faced while growing up with the condition.

Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Angela Yee, the Afrobeats star said people often react to him with pity or fear whenever they learn he is a sickle cell patient.

According to the singer, many people assume individuals living with the condition may not survive for long, a perception he described as difficult to deal with.

Adekunle Gold also recounted experiencing one of the most painful sickle cell crises of his life at the age of 20, admitting that the pain became so unbearable that he prayed for death.

He explained that his mother, who would usually discourage him from making such statements, remained silent that night because of how severe the situation had become.

The singer said the experience remains one of the darkest moments of his life, adding that he is grateful to still be alive despite the challenges associated with the condition.

Adekunle Gold has previously spoken publicly about his battle with sickle cell disease and has used his platform to raise awareness about the condition and encourage people living with it.
