YouTube to Use AI for Age Checks, Users May Need to Prove Their Age

YouTube is introducing a new artificial intelligence system that will estimate users’ ages in a bid to keep minors away from unsuitable content. The feature, which launches Wednesday for a limited group of U.S. users, could eventually roll out globally in the coming months.

The AI will analyse viewing habits, search patterns, and account history to determine whether a user is under 18 – regardless of the birthdate provided during sign-up. If the system flags someone as a minor, YouTube will automatically activate its existing teen safety measures, which limit access to sensitive content, disable personalised ads, and introduce prompts such as “take a break” reminders.

However, the move is already sparking debate. Adults mistakenly identified as underage will need to verify their age by submitting a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a selfie. Privacy advocates warn that this process could require users to share sensitive information, raising questions about data protection and security.

“YouTube says it uses advanced security to safeguard user data and will not use ID or credit card information for advertising,” a spokesperson confirmed, noting that users can delete their data at any time.

The update comes as major tech platforms face growing pressure from parents, lawmakers, and regulators to improve online safety for children. Meta and TikTok have already deployed similar AI tools, and several platforms – including Reddit and Discord – have introduced stricter age checks in line with new regulations like the UK’s Online Safety Act.

While YouTube insists the technology has worked effectively in other countries, some users have taken to social media with the hashtag #boycottyoutube, voicing fears of being wrongly flagged and subjected to intrusive verification steps.
