Domino’s Tests Robot Dog for Beach Pizza Deliveries in UK
Domino’s Pizza is trialling a robot dog delivery system to bring pizzas to beachgoers in Eastbourne, UK, while also protecting the food from opportunistic seagulls.
The pilot uses Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot Spot, rebranded as “Domidog”, and modified to handle sandy terrain. Equipped with cameras, sensors, and autonomous navigation, the robot can carry insulated pizza pods and avoid crowds or obstacles along the way.
The service works with Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery feature, allowing customers to drop a precise location. Staff then load the coordinates into Spot’s control tablet, attach the pizza container, and send the robot on its route. A supervisor monitors the delivery from a nearby tent, as UK regulations still require line-of-sight oversight during public trials.
When Domidog approaches, customers receive an alert. Tapping “Signal Driver” triggers a flashing light sequence, making it easier for the robot’s operator to identify the recipient.
Boston Dynamics’ Spot has previously been deployed in roles ranging from bomb disposal and policing to factory inspections and even dancing routines, but this marks one of its most unusual jobs to date.
Domino’s says the trial aims to solve the logistical challenge of delivering pizza directly to customers relaxing on the beach while keeping the food safe from seagulls.
