2Face Dismisses Comparisons Between Fela and Wizkid as Disrespectful
Veteran Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Face, has weighed in on the heated debate comparing global Afrobeats star Wizkid to the late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing the discussion as misplaced and disrespectful.
The debate gained fresh attention after Wizkid recently claimed he was “bigger” than Fela, a remark made in response to criticism from Seun Kuti over repeated comparisons between the singer and his father, the Afrobeat pioneer.
Speaking in a preview of an upcoming episode of the Mic On podcast, 2Face rejected the comparison, arguing that it fails to recognise the different eras and contexts in which both artists built their legacies.
According to the African Queen singer, placing Fela and Wizkid side by side diminishes the significance of Fela’s historical influence while also putting an unfair burden on Wizkid’s achievements.
“Comparing Fela with Wizkid is ridiculous,” 2Face said. “It is disrespectful to Fela, and at the same time, it is also unfair to Wizkid.”
He stressed that both musicians made their impact in distinct ways and under very different circumstances, adding that their contributions to Nigerian music should be appreciated on their own terms rather than measured against each other.
