Pepsi Withdraws as UK Festival Sponsor After Kanye West Backlash
Pepsi has withdrawn as the lead sponsor of the upcoming Wireless Festival in London following backlash over the booking of rapper Kanye West – also known as Ye – as the headline act.
The decision comes amid renewed criticism of the artist over past antisemitic remarks, which have drawn widespread condemnation in recent years despite subsequent public apologies.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the booking as “deeply concerning,” stressing that antisemitism must be firmly challenged and that public platforms should reflect values of inclusion and safety.
Pepsi had been the main sponsor of the three-day festival, scheduled to take place in July. However, the company’s withdrawal signals growing corporate unease over the controversy surrounding the event.
Sponsors Distance Themselves
In addition to Pepsi’s exit, Diageo also confirmed it would no longer support the festival in its current form. The drinks giant had been involved through key brands such as Johnnie Walker and Captain Morgan.
Festival organisers have yet to issue a detailed response, and sections of the event’s website listing sponsors were reportedly taken offline shortly after the announcements.
Political Reactions Intensify
The controversy has sparked strong reactions across the UK political spectrum. Ed Davey called for tougher action against antisemitism, including the possibility of barring the artist from entering the country.
Similarly, Kemi Badenoch emphasised the need to avoid amplifying voices associated with hate speech, while Nigel Farage expressed personal opposition to attending the event.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan also criticised the artist’s past comments, stating they do not reflect the city’s values, although he clarified that the decision to book the performer rests with festival organisers.
Ongoing Debate Over Platforming Controversial Figures
The situation highlights broader debates about whether public figures with controversial histories should be given major platforms, particularly at large-scale events.
Kanye West has faced multiple controversies in recent years, including backlash over antisemitic statements and actions that led to business fallout with major brands.
Despite this, he remains a high-profile figure in global music and is scheduled to headline all three days of the festival.
As the event approaches, uncertainty remains over whether additional sponsors may withdraw or if organisers will reconsider elements of the lineup in response to mounting pressure.
