Omawumi Says Love Has Always Been Transactional – Just More Expensive Now

Nigerian singer Omawumi has weighed in on the ongoing debate about modern relationships, arguing that love has always involved some form of exchange – just at a different cost.

In a recent interview, the Bottom Belle crooner explained that while many people today complain about relationships being “transactional,” that dynamic isn’t new. According to her, what has changed is the price tag attached to it.

She pointed out that in the past, simple gestures like ice cream or popcorn were enough to impress a romantic interest, but in today’s world, expectations have evolved – often requiring more expensive gifts like smartphones.

Omawumi also noted that society tends to focus heavily on what men spend in relationships, while overlooking the ways women also contribute and reciprocate.

She added that in many cases, men who feel pressured financially may have chosen partners with lifestyles or preferences that naturally come with higher expectations.

Her comments add another layer to the conversation around love, money, and expectations – especially in a time where economic realities are shaping how relationships play out.
