Global Finance Leaders Sound Alarm Over Powerful ‘Mythos’ AI Model

Top financial leaders around the world are raising red flags over a new artificial intelligence system developed by Anthropic, warning it could expose serious weaknesses in global financial infrastructure.

The model, known as Claude Mythos, has reportedly demonstrated the ability to uncover vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers – triggering urgent discussions among finance ministers and central bankers.

At a recent meeting hosted by the International Monetary Fund in Washington, Canadian finance minister François-Philippe Champagne described the situation as a major concern, noting that the risks posed by the technology are still largely unknown.

Banking leaders have echoed similar worries. C.S. Venkatakrishnan, CEO of Barclays, said the model’s capabilities are serious enough to demand immediate attention, particularly in identifying and fixing exposed vulnerabilities.

Meanwhile, Andrew Bailey of the Bank of England warned that advancements like Mythos could make it easier for cybercriminals to exploit weaknesses in core financial systems.

In response, governments and financial institutions – including the US Treasury – are being granted early access to the model to test and strengthen their systems before any public release.

While Anthropic maintains that the tool is helping identify critical flaws so they can be fixed, officials fear that similar technologies – especially if released without safeguards – could significantly increase cyber risk in an already highly connected global financial system.

The situation highlights a growing reality: as AI becomes more powerful, so do the threats – and the race to stay ahead is intensifying.
