Seun Kuti Says Online Clash with Wizkid Achieved Its Purpose
Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has said his public disagreement with fellow singer Wizkid achieved its intended objective, insisting the controversy helped highlight issues surrounding the legacy of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Your View programme, themed Inside the Mind of Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, the singer reflected on the online exchange that sparked widespread debate earlier this year.
When asked whether his dispute with Wizkid accomplished anything, Seun replied: “I think it achieved a lot. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s still not acceptable for one to claim to be aligned with the ideal of someone and the same person’s team works effectively, like consciously, to drag that person’s name down. That doesn’t make sense to me.”
The disagreement between the two artists, which unfolded about six months ago, generated widespread discussions on social media about Fela Kuti’s legacy and influence on contemporary Nigerian music.
During the interview, Seun also addressed a question about social media activist VeryDarkMan and whether he believed the activist was genuinely working to liberate Nigeria.
Rather than offer a direct opinion, the singer suggested the activist should answer such questions himself.
When asked, “Did you think VeryDarkMan is really fighting to liberate Nigeria?” Seun responded, “He’s giving them money?”
After the interviewer replied, “I don’t understand, does he have money that he’s giving them?” Seun said, “You can invite him for an interview and ask him. He said he’s not political, that he’s doing charity abi?”
The interview also touched on perceptions of Seun’s personality.
Asked whether he considered himself arrogant, the Afrobeat star rejected the description.
“I don’t think I’m arrogant because the authority is that of knowledge so I can’t put it to myself,” he said.
