Ali Baba Reveals How He Became a Father of Triplets at 59

Nigerian comedy icon, Atunyota Akpobome, better known as Ali Baba, has opened up about how he welcomed triplets at the age of 59, despite originally planning for just one more child.

Speaking on the Leadership Podcast, the veteran comedian shared that he and his wife, Mary, initially planned to have one more son after their children had left for school abroad. The couple had even considered adoption but later opted for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

Ali Baba explained that the decision to pursue IVF stemmed from his wife’s strong desire for another son. They intended to fertilize two eggs, hoping for one successful pregnancy. However, one of the eggs split, leading to the unexpected arrival of triplets.

“Madam had always wanted a son,” Ali Baba recounted. “We talked about it, and I was reluctant at first. I didn’t want to be doing school runs and joining PTA meetings at this age.”

He revealed that his wife convinced him to proceed despite his initial concerns about the economy. She pointed out that they were already supporting many people, through both their foundation, Purple Girl Foundation, and various other personal commitments, such as paying school fees for over 120 students.

Ali Baba shared how the unexpected news unfolded: “We agreed to try for two, but one of the eggs split into two, making it three. My wife and the doctor kept this from me at first. When I finally found out, she said, ‘Sometimes when we ask God for one blessing, He gives us more than we expect.’ Now, we have three boys.”

The comedian’s candid account highlights the unexpected turn of events that led to him becoming a father of triplets later in life, a journey that has brought him and his wife immense joy.
