Amaarae Says Janet Jackson Deserves ‘King of Pop’ Title More Than Michael Jackson

Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has sparked conversation after suggesting that music icon Janet Jackson is more deserving of the title “King of Pop” than her late brother, Michael Jackson.

The ‘Sad Girls Love Money’ singer made the remarks while discussing the influence of Janet Jackson’s acclaimed 1997 album, The Velvet Rope, during an interview with Pitchfork.

Reflecting on the project, Amaarae praised the album’s artistry, emotional depth, and experimentation, describing it as one of Janet Jackson’s finest works.

“Every Janet Jackson’s album is fantastic. But ‘The Velvet Rope’ is the best. If I was conscious in 1997 when the album dropped, I would have played it nonstop. It’s so vulnerable, sexy, aggressive and experimental.

“Janet, to me, is the real king of pop. No shade to Michael Jackson,” she said.

Amaarae’s comments highlight her admiration for Janet Jackson’s influence on contemporary music and pop culture. While Michael Jackson has long been widely recognized as the “King of Pop,” the singer’s remarks have added to ongoing discussions among fans and critics about the impact and legacy of both siblings on global music.
