Asake Shares Why He Prefers Singing in Yoruba
Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist Asake, whose real name is Ololade Ahmed, has opened up about his preference for singing in Yoruba. During a recent interactive session with fans on Instagram, the “Omo Ope” singer revealed that while he can perform in English, he feels more at ease expressing himself in his native language.
Asake made it clear that his choice to sing predominantly in Yoruba is a personal one, and he urged those who enjoy his music to embrace it in its original form. “I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba; it’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you love my music, love it with my Yoruba. If not, then don’t listen,” he stated.
All three of Asake’s albums—Mr Money With The Vibe (2022), Work of Art (2023), and the recently released Lungu Boy—feature lyrics primarily in Yoruba. Despite the language barrier, his music has gained international recognition, with his hit song “Amapiano” earning a nomination in the Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards. Although the award ultimately went to South African singer Tyla for her viral hit “Water,” Asake’s success continues to highlight the global appeal of his Yoruba-infused sound.
