BET Hip-Hop Awards: Black Sherif Wins Big as Burna Boy Loses 7 Nominations

Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar, Burna Boy, experienced a night of disappointment as he failed to secure any of the seven nominations he held at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The star-studded event took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on October 3, 2023, and was broadcast to the public on Tuesday night, October 10, 2023.

Kendrick Lamar Outshines Burna Boy

Burna Boy was nominated in several prestigious categories, including Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year. However, it was Kendrick Lamar who emerged as the victor in these categories, leaving Burna Boy without a win.

Burna Boy’s Near Misses

The renowned Nigerian artist also fell short in the Hustler of the Year category, which was clinched by 50 Cent, and the Best Collaboration of the Year, where his song ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage was surpassed by Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life.’

Burna Boy also faced disappointment in the Best Hip Hop Video category, as ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage was outperformed by Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Just Wanna Rock.’ In the Song of the Year category, Burna Boy’s entry also came up short, with the award going to the same song.

Black Sherif Triumphs

Amidst Burna Boy’s losses, Ghanaian rising star, Black Sherif, was a beacon of success. He secured victory in the Best International Flow category, defeating tough competition from South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus and Central Cee, among others.
