‘Why I Don’t Allow My Artistes to Release Songs Same Day as Wizkid, Asake’ – Don Jazzy
Don Jazzy, the renowned music executive and CEO of Mavin Records, has shared his strategy for scheduling new music releases to avoid competing with major Nigerian artists Wizkid and Asake. In a recent podcast interview with Fisayo Fosudo, Jazzy explained why he advises his artists against releasing songs or projects on the same day as these top performers.
Jazzy described releasing music on the same day as Wizkid or Asake as “suicidal,” given their significant influence and success in the streaming era. “We [Mavin] are shifting from the traditional Friday release date to Wednesdays and Thursdays because there are no more Fridays without another artist dropping a song,” Jazzy said.
He elaborated, “If my artist is set to drop a song or project on a Friday and Wizkid or Asake is also releasing that day, I will reschedule our release date. You don’t want to just die a natural death.”
Mavin Records, home to artists such as Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Johnny Drille, and Lifesize Teddy, is known for its strategic approach to the music industry.
