Chocolate City Recognised in EU Study as Creative Industry Success Story
Nigerian entertainment powerhouse Chocolate City Group has earned international recognition in a newly released European Union-backed report spotlighting thriving creative enterprises across Africa.
The report, titled Success Stories in the Creative Industries in Africa and Other Emerging Markets, was developed by PwC Nigeria, Restless Global, and TFCC on behalf of Proparco and the EU’s CreatiFI programme. It profiles 12 standout creative businesses from six African countries, highlighting their strategies for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
Among them is Chocolate City, a company widely credited with shaping Nigeria’s hip-hop scene and later adapting seamlessly to the global Afrobeats wave. The label first rose to prominence through trailblazing acts like MI Abaga and Ice Prince and now manages a new generation of artists such as Blaqbonez, Young Jonn, Tar1q, and Candy Bleakz.
In addition to signing and developing talent, Chocolate City has broadened its reach by offering management services to established icons like Afrobeat veteran Femi Kuti, demonstrating a diversified business model that extends beyond traditional record label operations.
Audu Maikori, founder and Executive Vice Chairman of Chocolate City Group, reflected on the transformation of Africa’s creative landscape over the past two decades. “What’s remarkable is how companies like ours have navigated challenges through diversification and strong partnerships to create sustainable business models,” he said. “We’ve seen the industry evolve from a fragmented scene to a globally respected ecosystem where African companies can hold their own while staying true to their roots.”
The study not only affirms Chocolate City’s influence in Nigeria but also underscores its position as a blueprint for success in the wider African creative economy.
