CNN Announces Layoffs Amid Major Revamp of Programming and Digital Strategy
CNN has announced a 6% reduction in its workforce, resulting in the loss of approximately 200 jobs, as part of a significant overhaul of its operations. The restructuring, revealed Thursday, includes a revamped weekday show lineup, a fresh digital strategy, and the introduction of new streaming and subscriber services.
CEO Mark Thompson detailed the changes in a memo to staff, emphasizing the network’s adaptation to shifting audience behaviours. “Our objective is a simple one: to shift CNN’s gravity towards the platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting,” he wrote. “This difficult and sometimes painful process of change is the only way to secure CNN’s future as one of the world’s greatest news organizations.”
Despite the layoffs, Thompson noted that new roles would be created, minimizing the overall impact on headcount by year’s end. The announcement also coincides with a $70 million investment from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery to bolster CNN’s digital initiatives.
Key Changes in CNN’s Strategy
- Digital Expansion: CNN plans to launch a new streaming service and unveil redesigned digital platforms with additional subscriber-focused products, including its first lifestyle-oriented offering.
Programming Adjustments:
- Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room will shift to a 10 a.m.–12 p.m. slot, with Pamela Brown joining as co-anchor.
- Audie Cornish, previously hosting a podcast, will anchor a new 6 a.m. show.
- Kasie Hunt takes over at 4 p.m., while Rahel Solomon will lead a new program at 5 a.m.
Discussions are underway to assign a new time slot for Jim Acosta. - Streaming Services: CNN Max, the network’s existing streaming platform, will remain, but plans are in motion for an additional streaming product aimed at enhancing the linear TV experience.
- The revamped weekday schedule is set to debut in March, aimed at infusing “energy and competitive edge” while aligning production costs with the evolving economics of linear television.
Industry-Wide Challenges
CNN’s changes reflect broader struggles faced by major news networks as audiences shift toward digital platforms. This marks the second significant staff reduction at CNN in recent years, following a 3% workforce cut in 2022.
Thompson’s strategy seeks to ensure CNN remains a trusted news source while navigating these industry transitions. “America and the world need high-quality, fair-minded, trustworthy sources of news more than ever,” he said.
