‘Dad Was Assassinated in Our Presence’ – Teni

Popular Nigerian singer, Teniola Apata, known as Teni, recently opened up about the profound impact of a traumatic childhood event on her life. In a candid discussion on the “Tea With Tay” podcast, hosted by actor Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh, aka Taymesan, Teni shared the emotional story of her father’s assassination, which continues to shape her life.

Teni’s father, Simeon Apata, a retired Nigerian Army Brigadier-General, fell victim to a tragic act of violence when he was assassinated by gunmen on January 8, 1995, in their Lagos home. The singer, now a well-known artist, revealed that she was merely two years old when this horrifying incident unfolded right before her eyes in their living room.

Recalling her father’s character, Teni described him as a disciplinarian and a prominent figure in the community. Brig. Gen. Apata was not only a soldier but also the owner of Apata Memorial High School, demonstrating his commitment to education. He was also renowned for his philanthropic endeavours.

However, the trauma of witnessing her father’s assassination at such a tender age left an indelible mark on Teni’s life. She explained how this traumatic event robbed her of the opportunity to have a father figure while growing up, and it instilled deep-seated trust issues within her. The gunmen had entered their home with the sole purpose of taking her father’s life, leaving an enduring emotional scar.

Despite the painful memories associated with her father’s tragic passing, Teni emphasized that he would forever remain her hero. His memory serves as a source of inspiration and a testament to the resilience she has shown throughout her life.
