Xzibit Believes ‘Hip Hop Has Become a Mockery of Itself’

In a recent panel discussion in Santa Monica, California, Xzibit expressed his concerns about the current state of Hip Hop while also sharing ideas on how to elevate the genre. The discussion, which included Layzie Bone, featured Xzibit passionately discussing what he sees as the decline of Hip Hop.

Xzibit began by stating that Hip Hop has become too accessible, leading to a decline in quality. He noted that the genre’s accessibility has given rise to a perception that anyone can become a rapper with just a laptop and internet access.

“It’s become a mockery of itself. It’s become too accessible,” he remarked, emphasizing that aspiring artists do themselves a disservice by participating in this oversaturated landscape.

Offering suggestions for improvement, Xzibit advocated for unity within the Hip Hop community. He proposed the formation of a union or a governing board to organize and represent the interests of artists. According to Xzibit, the lack of ownership and control within the industry has hindered its progress.

“We should have unionized. We should have had some kind of union, we should have organized ourselves,” Xzibit stated. He emphasized the need for artists to take control of their own destiny and have a say in defining the genre.

Xzibit highlighted that Hip Hop is a billion-dollar industry but lacks the respect it once enjoyed. He called for a renewed focus on the genre’s roots and a commitment to cleaning up the industry.

While Xzibit hasn’t released a new album since 2012, he had teased a forthcoming project called “Kingmaker” in 2022. He expressed his love for Hip Hop and his desire to remain present for his fanbase but acknowledged that his priorities were evolving with age.

Despite announcing a potential release in early 2023, the album has not yet been released, leaving fans eagerly awaiting its arrival.
