‘Davido Pretended to be Poor as Upcoming Artist’ – Maleek Berry
Afrobeats singer and producer Maleek Berry recently shared an intriguing story about his early encounters with fellow artist Davido during their days as up-and-coming musicians. Appearing on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, Berry recounted how Davido, despite hailing from a wealthy family, portrayed himself as an ordinary, struggling artist.
Berry recalled their early days working together in a London studio, where Davido was still relatively unknown. “I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey to record,” Berry shared. The connection between the two was facilitated by one of Davido’s cousins via social media, and at the time, they were just two Nigerian guys passionate about music.
What surprised Berry the most was Davido’s ability to blend in with those around him, giving no hint of his affluent background. “He acted like one of those poor kids,” Berry noted. However, the reality of Davido’s wealth became apparent when Berry visited his father’s mansion. “When I pulled up to his dad’s crib, I was surprised. There’s money and there’s money!” Berry said, emphasizing the stark difference between Davido’s humble demeanor and the immense wealth he discovered.
In addition to these revelations, Berry also credited Davido for connecting him with another Nigerian music star, Wizkid, years later, highlighting the supportive role Davido played in his career.
