Davido Faces Backlash Over Comments on Nigeria’s Economy
Nigerian music icon Davido is facing widespread criticism following remarks made during an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, where he discouraged black Americans – particularly Nigerians in the diaspora – from relocating to Nigeria, citing the nation’s economic challenges.
During the podcast, Davido reportedly said, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” in response to discussions about African Americans considering relocation amid concerns about policies expected under the administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
The comments sparked outrage, with many Nigerians accusing the Afrobeats star of painting the country in a negative light on an international platform.
Calls for Retraction
Prominent voices have demanded an immediate retraction from Davido. Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed disappointment on Facebook, writing, “My in-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles. This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement asap. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!”
Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, also criticised Davido, describing his remarks as “unpatriotic.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ahmad wrote, “Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that. They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves. @NOA_Nigeria.”
Public Reactions and National Sentiment
Davido’s statement has reignited debates about the responsibilities of public figures and their roles as ambassadors of their home countries. While some Nigerians agree with his assessment of the economic situation, others argue that such remarks should not be made on global platforms, as they may damage the country’s image.
The artist, known for his global influence and patriotic songs, is yet to publicly address the controversy or respond to calls for retraction.
